Israel at the 1972 Summer Olympics : ウィキペディア英語版 | Israel at the 1972 Summer Olympics
Israel competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, which began on August 26. Shaul Ladany returned to compete in the 50-kilometer walk. He had been imprisoned in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as a child, and said he wanted to show the Germans that a Jew had survived, and he wore a Star of David on his warm-up jersey. When he was congratulated by locals on his fluent German, he responded: "I learned it well when I spent a year at Bergen Belsen".〔 Asked about competing in Germany, the Holocaust survivor said: "I don't say I have to hate Germans. Of course not the younger generation, but I have no special sympathy for the older generation who have been accused of what happened in the Nazi period." On September 5 and 6, in the Munich Massacre, 11 members of the Israeli delegation—5 athletes, 2 referees, and 4 coaches (names bolded on this page)—were taken hostage by PLO terrorists and murdered. The remainder of the team left Munich the day after the conclusion of the horrific event (Sep. 7).
